Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay was born on August 24, 1972, at Long Beach California. Her aunt Denise encouraged her passion for the arts and her creative side. She worked as an evening nurse in order to give her aunt to have the time she needed throughout the day for the love of art, literature, and theatre. DuVernay was exposed to the movie of 1961 West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay was educated by her mother about how art can be used as a tool for activism. DuVernay's mother also had a an awareness of social issues and showed DuVernay how to communicate via art. DuVernay was raised together with her parents in Compton, spent each summer at Lowndes County Alabama in the residence of her father's parents. DuVernay's father recalled watching the historical civil rights marches over the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the adjacent city of Selma Alabama. DuVernay was strongly influenced by her time in Selma to later direct a documentary about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay completed Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood, California in 1990. DuVernay enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles following her graduation, and earned diplomas in English as well as African American Studies. When she was in school, DuVernay became interested in producing for broadcast journalism. DuVernay was an intern at CBS News at the time of O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being instructed to take a look at the junk of a jury member's home. The tasks that she had to accomplish left her unsatisfied and, following her decision not to continue in journalism, she shifted to the world of publicity. DuVernay began her career as a junior assistant to publicity at a small film studio shortly after she graduated from the college. She founded The DuVernay Agency, her public relations firm in 1999.
